After graduating in the top 15% from the University of Baltimore Law School, I went to work for several of the best law firms in Baltimore and Washington, D.C. Unfortunately, these firms were not set up in a manner that allowed me to be the kind of lawyer that the firm’s clients truly needed. These families needed an advocate that they could trust and rely on and had experienced what they experience as they raise their family.
I soon discovered the trusted adviser relationship that I sought to have with my clients would be impossible to provide at a large law firm that charged by the hour. These firms discouraged their clients from asking questions or providing updated information because the clients were afraid of the bills that they would receive in the mail. At $200/hour would you want to pay your lawyer $50 for a 15 minute phone call with you or $100 to think about your case? As a result, most families receive a plan that does not fit their needs and will fail during their time of need.
When I was 12 years old, my mother died and we found ourselves in the middle of a situation that we were completely unprepared for. My parents had done some planning, but this lawyer did not stay in touch with us when the law changed, and did not ensure that my parents funded their trust. As a result, their plan failed when they needed it the most. When I went to work as a lawyer, I was stunned that the best firms practiced in the same flawed manner as the attorney that had “helped” my family. Since far too many lawyers practice in this manner, their clients’ plans fail at an alarmingly high rate. Therefore, many people have not protected themselves as they thought. Unfortunately, they have paid an attorney a large amount of money while accomplishing virtually nothing.
As a child from a family of eight without a mom, I realized that traditional estate plans, created by the typical estate attorney that had not experienced the tragedy that my family endured, did not ensure kids would be raised as their parents envisioned nor prevent their kids from being taken by the authorities if their parents passed away or were incapacitated due to disease, illness or accident.
I co-founded Carducci & Braggs to focus on serving people who do not want my family’s story to become their family’s story. They want to ensure their plan will work no matter what may happen and appreciate having a trusted adviser help their family when they cannot be there.
I am focused on helping parents ensure that their plan works at the most critical times in their lives, and am available to discuss the options with new clients. I ensure that their kids are raised as they want if anything happens to them. It is my honor and high privilege to meet with families to create an individualized estate plan for their unique situation, in order to ensure their assets are protected and their children will never be taken out of the family home by the authorities.
